 Week 7: Papercraft Objects - Printed Templates

The significant object I have chosen to make for this project is the flying DeLorean from back to the future. This object is important to me because growing up my dad introduced me to a bunch of '80s movies and we would watch them all the time and still do. 

I had a lot of time on my hands this week to work on this project so I tried to make my design very accurate but still simplified. It still came out a bit more complicated than I had planned. This is very noticeable on the sides of the car where I had to make a bunch of triangles in order for them to be formed into planar surfaces.

Revisions for next time:

Now that I have my design printed I noticed that a few of the tabs could have been a lot larger but overall they will work fine for now. There are a few unnecessary polylines that I forgot to delete as well. I also think that the energy source compartment on the back (referred to as Mr. Fusion by Doc) should also be largened and/or simplified since it is very small and detailed and will probably be really difficult to be put together. I might also make the wheels slightly thicker.

 Week 9 + 10: Papercraft Objects - Final Revision Over a period of 2 weeks we are to finalize the design and create the final for our chosen papercraft object. I started off with adding and revising a few details: Cut and rotated the sides of the car to create doors Got rid of the fuel source on the back Made the top part a flat surface Added chairs, middle compartment, back wall with flux capacitor box attached, a wheel, headlights and taillights, and license plate Updated Folded Design: Renders: Printing Template: Here I added the few tabs that were missing from the previous design. Final: I had a lot more trouble putting this design together than the previous one for the prototype. If I were to redo it I would enlarge a few pieces. And I would also use multiple layers of cardstock on the body of the car to make it more sturdy since the final product is a little wonky. Week 5: Papercraft Research

 Week 5: Papercraft Research For this research project I will be talking about  Illuminated Cut Paper Light Boxes by Hari & Deepti. Here are a few photos: This piece is my favorite: In order to create these pieces the artist couple cuts out intricate designs on watercolour paper. These cut outs are then placed inside of a lightbox which is lit from the back using small LED light strips. The use of layering combined with the lighting is what gives the art depth. Hari & Deepti are great storytellers and have discovered that the depth and layering achieved by using paper as a medium greatly reflects that.  The couple emphasize the duplicity of possibilities when using paper as a medium. Paper gives artists endless amounts of options of where to go with their work but it can also give them nothing or simplicity. Final Blog Post: Milestone Projects

 Final Blog Post: Milestone Projects Mesh Mashup: The original Tinkercad design for this was very different than the end result but I think that is what made this project successful. I ended up taking a bit of a mystical route in the design that gives the object an interesting narrative.  If I were to do this assignment again I would go back and smooth out some of the attachments such as the windows and lantern. In the final render the lack of detail got obscured. Or I would find a way to make the attachments on my own.  Papercraft Object: I had a lot of fun with this assignment and spent a lot of time on the details when working in Rhino. The only problem is that when printed some of the details were tiny and very difficult to piece together in real life. There were also a few structural and support problems when putting together the final design.
